Mariachi legend Jose ''Pepe'' Martinez makes an appearance in the documentary film
Mariachi High, but it’s the kids of Zapata High School in Zapata, Texas, who are the real stars. The students are part of the high-school music ensemble Mariachi Halcon. The film shows the students as they prepare for two prestigious competitions. First there’s the Mariachi Vargas Extravaganza in San Antonio, with Martinez acting as host. Then there’s the statewide competition. Rehearsal scenes and competition performances are interspersed with scenes of the students’ home life.
The film, directed by Ilana Trachtman and Kim Connell, is set to screen on PBS later this month as part of the PBS Summer Arts Festival. 7 p.m. Talento Bilingüe de Houston, 333 South Jensen. For information, call 713-222-1213 or visit www.talentobilingue.org.
