Mary Karr

Mary Karr wasn't exactly itching to pen her latest memoir, Lit. The renowned Texas novelist/poet has voiced how frustrating the writing process can be in interviews with Salon and National Public Radio. This is surprising, considering that she already has two memoirs under her belt - The Liar's Club and Cherry - that deal with her tumultuous childhood and teenage years. But the Pushcart Prize winner (among several awards), New York Times best-selling author, Peck Professor of English Literature at Syracuse University and regular New Yorker contributor found that even dealing with a psychotic, alcoholic mother did not compare with the demons of her adulthood. Lit covers Karr's journey through motherhood, marriage, divorce and her own battle with alcoholism (after her mother's passing). In today's appearance, she’ll read, then participate in a Q&A session with Houston novelist Olive Hershey. 7:30 p.m. Hobby Center, 800 Bagby.
