A young girl, unappreciated and abused by her parents (Mr. and Mrs. Wormwood) and the principal (Miss Trunchbill) of the school she's sent to, somehow remains true to herself and prospers. “She shows her strength and she stands up for what's right. I'm so excited to share with that with young kids who may not have the strength to stand up for what they know is right,” says Matilda the Musical ensemble member Darius Wright.

Wright, who grew up in Bellaire and Pearland, says the movie version based on the book by Roald Dahl “is very personal to me and to a lot of people” and the musical continues that. The Oklahoma City University graduate in musical theater is back in town for his first chance to perform at the Hobby Center in the tour brought in by Theatre Under the Stars to start its 2015-16 main stage season.
Matilda the Musical won five Olivier Awards in England before coming to the United States and Broadway were it won five Tony Awards in 2013. It's the story of a smart girl with ignorant parents – the Wormwoods – who is made fun of for among other things preferring books over TV and essentially for being bright. Another special talent she has is that she can move things with her mind – something that her parents never recognize. Fortunately Matilda meets Miss Honey, a redemptive figure, proving that not all adults are obliviously bad.
Wright understudies several roles including that of Matilda's brother, an escape artist and a doctor. He applauds the children in the show, most between 9 and 12 years of age, “who are doing things that are amazing, who are doing this high level, precise choreography. Everyone wants to see that. It's a spectacle.”
