Curators/hosts Shafer Hall and Kristin Kostick wanted the Mongoose vs. Cobra Reading Series to offer bar patrons a chance to hear some of the ever-expanding poetry scene in Houston, all while being near plenty of cold beer. Poets on the podium this month include Shane Lake, a Massachusetts native pursuing his doctorate at the University of Houston. Lake has a Robert Frost flavor tempered with the rusting sadness of the modern world. He weaves tales of rural strangeness whose images stay with you. Sam Mansfield, another New England transplant, will also be on hand to chill things down a bit with his penchant for cold-creeping murder ballads. Also reading is Peter B. Hyland, currently director of development at The Menil Collection. Hyland has a BFA in drawing and painting from the University of North Texas and an MFA in poetry from the University of Houston Creative Writing Program.
