Motel Tropicana

Leighza Walker, artistic director of Big Head Productions, likes to push boundaries, which is exactly what the company’s latest production, Motel Tropicana: An Adult Series of Short No-Tells, was designed to do. According to Walker, the show is a series of shorts set in a seedy motel room. Each is seven to ten minutes long, and together they make for a very diverse night of theater.

“One of the plays, called Winner, is written by Tom Stell,” says Walker, “and it is about a coach and a former student. And the student has kidnapped him because he blames him for all his life’s problems.” There is also a dark piece by Shannon Murdoch. “It’s about a woman trying to obtain a heart on the black market for her son.”

Walker’s instructions to the writers were simple: “We told them to write what they always wanted to write. So we got a little boundary-pushing and something that had some edge to it.”
