New Year’s Eve Rundown

The New Year’s clock is counting down, and if you’re reading this, chances are you’re still trying to figure out what to do (or you just enjoy reading our witty prose). Your time is precious — especially if you’re still looking for a date — so without further ado, here’s the rundown of what some of our favorite spots around town are doing to welcome 2008.

Notsuoh is hosting the rock sounds of Ladyheat. The quartet teeters between new wave musings and the garage sensibilities of groups like The Strokes and The Hives. If you’re looking to kick 2008 in the ass as soon as it shows up, then this is a good place to plant yourself. Rock and rollers Ninevolt and ¡alarma! and the bluesy Tontons start things off at 314 Main. For information, visit www.myspace.com/notsuoh-music. $2.

Of course, there will be a lot of in-your-face action at Boondocks as well. The American Sharks and Cop Warmth will guarantee that the amount of champagne consumed will equal the amount spit onto the stage. These two will likely battle it out for most energetic performance of the evening, with the Sharks offering their signature raucous delivery of fast-paced rock and Cop Warmth spitting out hardcore sing-alongs while defining the phrase “maximizing the space on stage” (i.e., jumping around a lot). The Wiggins and O Pioneers!!! are also on the bill. 1417 West-heimer. For information, call 713-522-8500 or visit www.myspace.com/boondocksbar. Free.

Rudyard’s will go metal with a performance by the local shredder-drummer duo Golden Axe. Along with The Squishees and Kvalla, the pair will guarantee plenty of horn-shaped hands are raised before and after midnight. 2010 Waugh. For information, call 713-521-0521 or visit www.rudyards.com. $10.

If you’d rather shake it than break it, The Proletariat has RockBox resident DJ Witnes along with The Spinning Kitties, who will keep things bumping in between performances by Houston hip-hoppers T.H.E. Fly & Rooster and Lower Life Form. This will also be the last New Year’s for the Pro, which is slated to close in February. What better way to say, “It was nice knowing you” than a champagne toast? 903 Richmond. For information, call 713-523-1199 or visit www.the-proletariathouston.com. $10.

If your style is more to the right of the dial, then check out 94.5 The Buzz’s BLT (Black Tie, Lingerie, Toga) IV at Warehouse Live. The night’s cover includes food, drink, a champagne toast and music by Buzz-friendly bands Adrenaline, Citizen X and The Slags, as well DJs spinning Top 40 favorites. You don’t have to dress up, but come on, other than Halloween, when do girls have an excuse to dress so scandalously? Take a group of friends, or go stag and try to find a date before the clock strikes 2008. Admission even includes a hotel room for the night (wink, wink) pending the package you choose. 813 St. Emanuel Street. For tickets and information, call 713-225-5483 or visit www.warehouselive.com. $84 to $349.

Wherever you decide to ring in the New Year, drive safely or call a cab if you can’t — 713-236-1111. (Don’t you roll your eyes at us!)
