O Casamento de Romeu e Julieta

We’re pretty sure Shakespeare didn’t have anything like the romantic comedy O Casamento de Romeu e Julieta (The Marriage of Romeo and Juliet) in mind when he sat down to write his famous love story. In other reworkings of the tale, the young lovers have been separated by race, religion, class, even gang affiliations. In Romeu e Julieta, it’s soccer that keeps the star-crossed lovers apart. Set in contemporary Brazil, Romeu is a fan of the Corinthians team, while Julieta roots for the Palmeiras. Knowing that her family would never accept anyone who supports the Corinthians, Romeu pretends to be a Palmeiras fan. But he can only keep the ruse up for so long. Once he admits the truth, all hell breaks out around the young couple. 8 p.m. Brazilian Arts Foundation, 1133 East 11th Street. For information, call 713-862-3300 or visit www.brazilianarts.org.
