What, Another Kids Movie? Isn't Rush Coming Out This Week? Yes, because as a heterosexual man I was *so* eager to see another movie where Chris Hemsworth takes his shirt off.

Not So Brief Plot Synopsis: Kicking in mere minutes after he shut off the "Flint Lockwood Diatonic Super Mutating Dynamic Food Replicator" (FLDSMDFR), the sequel finds inventory Flint Lockwood (Bill Hader) recruited to work with his childhood idol: world famous inventor Chester V (Will Forte), who wants Flint to join his company, the Apple-esque Live Corp, and contribute inventions for the betterment of mankind. Chester V may have ulterior motives, however, and meanwhile things back on Chewandswallow, Flint's home, have gotten very weird indeed. Turns out the FLDSMDFR isn't deactivated at all, and is churning out "foodimals" at an alarming rate.
"Critical" Analysis: Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs 2 is the first animated movie I've seen since Who Framed Roger Rabbit? that made me wish I took hallucinogens.
It isn't just the design of the foodimals -- the watermelophants, tacodiles (and tacodile supremes), shrimpanzees, and the rest -- it's the fantastic palette directors Cody Cameron and Kris Pearn work with. CWACOM2 (sounds like a death laser satellite) is the most eye-popping (American) animated movie I've seen in a very long while. Unfortunately, I was with my kids, so the most altered my state got was courtesy of that six liter Coke Zero I drank.
The screenwriters (including Sam Weir himself) have made it easier for kids and adults who didn't see the first movie (*cough*) by bringing everyone up to speed from the get-go, and also introducing the character of Chester V, Flint's spaghetti-limbed, holograph loving mentor/nemesis. For those who fondly recall the first movie, the rest of the gang is mostly still around, minus Bruce Campbell as the Mayor. And apparently Terry Crews replaces Mr. T as Officer Devereaux. This makes me sad.
Kids will probably dig the foodimals quite a bit. There really are some inspired choices (that come with all the requisite puns: "There's a leek in the boat!"). My only concern after watching was that children might be reluctant to eat their fruits and vegetables after delighting in the antics of the "bananaostrich." Then again, anything that keeps them from developing an interest in marshmallows or cheeseburgers (the cheese spider is kind of terrifying) is fine with me.
Cameron and Pearn keep things moving, and most of the voice cast returns to reprise their roles (curse you, Mr. T!). Andy Samberg as Chicken Brent and Neil Patrick "I'll Apparently Take Any Role I'm Offered" Harris as Steve the monkey stand out particularly. And my secret girlfriend Kristen Schaal does a swell job as Chester V's assistant Barb, the orangutan with a human brain inside her monkey brain. Her "turducken" comment made me laugh out loud, much to consternation of my daughters.
I'm not sure what else to say (especially since I forgot to take any notes during the screening and it was, like, a week ago). Cloud With A Chance Of Meatballs 2 is vibrant, funny, and relatively short. Pretty decent for a children's movie.
Cloud With A Chance Of Meatballs 2 is in theaters today. This review should in no way be construed as an endorsement of the use of narcotics.
