''Rita Bernstein: Out of Place''

Rita Bernstein gave up a career as a civil rights lawyer to spend time with her family. Somewhere along the way, she picked up a camera and began photographing domestic life. It seems the change was a good move, because some of her images have become part of the permanent collections of prestigious museums such as our own Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. In her new exhibit, ''Rita Bernstein: Out of Place,'' at John Cleary Gallery, she shows photographs such as Charmaine, a soft--focus image of a girl in a dark jumper and long-sleeved white blouse. There’s also Joanna, Age 16, an image of a young girl on a bed, her dark hair spread across the white sheet. The work is lyrical, graceful and engaging. 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays. Through September 1. 2635 Colquitt.
Tuesdays-Saturdays. Starts: June 2. Continues through Sept. 1, 2012
