So You Think You Can Dance: Season 8 Finale, Melanie Moore America's Newest Sweetheart
That's all, folks.
After weeks of wading through cheesy personal montages, interpreting incoherent judges' comments, subjecting ourselves to meh musical performances, oh yeah, and watching a lot of dancing, Season 8 of So You Think You Can Dance was over just seconds after Melanie Moore was named America's Favorite Dancer (if Cat says it, do we write it "America's Favourite Dancer?").
Stop the presses. What a surprise. Melanie who? Really?
In case you can't tell, that's sarcasm. Of course Melanie won. And of course Sasha, Marko and Tadd ended up in the final four. I mean, they're great dancers, and barring injury, they'll all probably go on to do great things in the art form.

But in one of the most unsurprising episodes of the season, and one of the most unsurprising finales ever, was it really necessary to make the finale into a two-hour-long block? If you're going to make us watch for two hours what is normally an hour-long block of television, there had better be flying clowns on bicycles, or at least some guest performances. Instead, Fox gave us a mega-panel of judges (Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Sonya Tayeh, Robin Antin, Lil' C, Tyce Diorio, Mary Murphy and Nigel Lythgoe). The top 20 returned as well, and while it was nice to see them, it's a finale, people. Bring out the big guns.
Instead, we got a few poorly disguised ads for Glee 3D and Gatorade. The judges each chose their favorite dances for the dancers to perform one last time, and yes, we loved the Woodpecker dance and the Soggy Cornflakes routine, but it's not like we don't have Youtube. The only thing that had changed about the dances were the camera angles (kind of) and they actually got rid of the distracting makeup for Melanie and Marko's statue dance.See?
We did get to see Nick, Jess and the winner of SYTYCD UK, Matt Flint, come out and perform a stirring tap routine, but other than that, the episode was same old, same old.
I don't begrudge the judges their choices (they were largely what I would have chosen), but it would have been interesting to poll the audiences and have the dancers perform "America's Favorite Routine."
I guess what I'm complaining about is that the finale was more about the dancers than it was about the viewers, which sounds insensitive, so I'll stop now. This is Melanie Moore's moment, after all.
We revisited: Mary, Sasha and Kent, "Fool of Me" (the wall routine) Melanie and Marko, "I Got You" (the one with the kiss and Melanie's ridonk dress) Robin Antin, Tadd and Lauren "Another One Bites The Dust" (Tadd kept his hat this time) Lil' C, Robert and Missy, "Break Ya Neck" (the woodpecker routine) Cat (yes, Cat got to choose her own routine) "Water for Elephants" (the circus routine) Mary, Melanie and Neil, "Total Eclipse of the Heart" Jesse, Marko and Allison, "I Know It's Over" Tyce, The Geishas Routine (top 10 girls) Lil' C, Chris and Ashley, "Please Mr. Jailer" Sonya, The Doors Routine (top 10 boys) Jesse, Caitlynn and Pasha, tango Mary, Marko and Melanie, "Turn to Stone"
What were your favorite routines from season 8?
