Spitting Ether: A Reality Bending Dance

More so than any other art form, dance is grounded in the physical; dancers are, after all, made of flesh and bone. In collaboration with lighting artist David J Deveau, NobleMotion Dance presents Spitting Ether: A Reality Bending Dance at the Barnevelder Movement Arts Complex. As its name suggests, the five-piece concert investigates the realms of the in-between, including the spiritual, mythical and fantastical aspects of consciousness. Deveau’s effervescent lighting design and special effects create an eerie atmosphere where spirits appear and disappear, and the haunting imagery of hospital rooms and gas chambers envelops the stage.

In Landing Light, a dancer’s movement is captured by a video camera and is then projected back onto the dancer for a stunning, shadow-like effect. The merging of dance and technology is also exemplified in The Ether Chamber, which sees a group of dancers encased in a ten-foot glass enclosure caught in a whirlwind of light and fog. Spitting Ether showcases all of the company’s signature elements, including incredible athleticism, raw physicality and the integration of state-of-the-art theatrics. It’s a not-to-be-missed treat for all lovers of modern dance.
