T. Jefferson Parker: Border Lords

Mystery author T. Jefferson Parker counts May 23, 1984, as a red-letter day. It was the day he got an acceptance letter for his first novel, Laguna Heat. The book went on to become a New York Times bestseller and an HBO movie starring Rip Torn, Harry Hamlin and Catherine Hicks. Twenty-six years, 18 books and three Edgar Awards later, Parker can be said to be at the top of his game. (The Washington Post has called his work “the best of today’s crime fiction.”)

His newest release, Border Lords, is fourth in the Charlie Hood series. Hood is a Los Angeles Sheriff’s deputy and a member of a special ATF task force, so you would think the bad guys don’t stand a chance against him. In normal circumstances, that might be true. The thing is, Parker never puts Hood in normal circumstances. Border Lords has him facing down Mexican drug cartels, corrupt officials and maybe a fellow ATF agent.

The book chronicles the search for ATF agent Sean Ozburn, who has disappeared while investigating the Baja Cartel undercover. His only communication has been a series of strange videos his wife is receiving. Unsure if the missing agent is in trouble or has changed sides, Hood sets out to find Oz. 6:30 p.m. Murder by the Book, 2342 Bissonnet.
