The Day I Saw Your Heart

Mélanie Laurent has a face that was made for the screen. Her wistful eyes, sharpened cheekbones and glowing ivory pallor were designed to emote the struggles of a tormented French ingenue. Laurent provided the note of redemption in Quentin Tarantino's Inglourious Basterds and played the soulful love interest in Mike Mills's Beginners. In Jennifer Dévoldere's The Day I Saw Your Heart, she stars in her very own vehicle, smoldering as Justine, a 27-year-old lab technician with commitment issues. Part of the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston's premieres series, Your Heart follows Justine as she comes to terms with her inability to have a substantial relationship. Things start to change for the better when she falls for a shoe salesman, but her newfound bliss is short-lived when she discovers that her 60-year-old father is expecting a child with his second wife. Justine and her half-sister Dom, who is navigating through the difficult process of adoption, are both stunned by the revelation and find kinship in their mutual disapproval. Dévoldere's film is an honest and funny portrayal of family and what happens when life throws unexpected curveballs. 7 p.m. August 24, 25, and 30, 5 p.m. August 26. 1001 Bissonnet.
