The Prep School Negro

When André Robert Lee won a scholarship to an elite prep school, his family was thrilled. Lee lived in one of Philadelphia’s black ghettos, and his mother supported the family by working at a minimum wage job. A good education would change Lee’s life, everyone thought, but no one knew just how much. In the documentary film The Prep School Negro, the now adult Lee revisits his experiences as a teen. Caught between two cultures, Lee eventually came to believe that he no longer fully belonged to either. 7 p.m. Houston Museum of African American Culture, 4807 Caroline.
