The Houston Center for Photographys annual auction is one of the highlights of the season for art lovers. Its easy to see why since the works up for sale include photos by some of the worlds leading talents, contemporary and historical. During todays
Tour of the Preview Exhibition, Anne Tucker, the Gus and Lyndall Wortham Curator of Photography at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, and Clint Willour, curator of the Galveston Art Center, offer background information about the photographers and the images place in history.
Among the images is Nuevo Mundo #6A by Tatiana Parcero. It shows a womans pale, bare back which has been illustrated with an old-world map in red ink. On Patrol, Iraq by Stanley Greene shows a soldier in full riot gear facing an old woman in what seems to be a narrow alley. Not all the photos are recent works; Lionel Hampton, The Hippodrome, Memphis, TN mid-1950s by Ernest Withers shows the bandleader/percussionist in full swing as he performs before a standing room-only crowd. 1441 West Alabama.
