Toy Fans Turn Out for New Dunny Release
"Red Demon," by Jesse Hernandez
Much like the weather, business was brisk last night at Domy Books. The popular toymaker Kidrobot was releasing its Dunny "Azteca II" series and anticipation was high for the new $10 vinyl toys produced primarily by Mexican artists and designers.
The dozen or so fans that arrived early and purchased at least one full case were guaranteed a rare, limited-edition toy, or "chase" figure, while others simply purchased single-boxed figures prior to the official event. They sat among the opened cartons discussing their finds as well as previous Dunny releases. For some, the draw of that special limited-edition figure was enough. But for a few others, more entrepreneurial interests were at stake.
Hoping for a "chase" figure.
The most die-hard Dunny fans buy multiple cases in the hopes of being able to turn around and sell their toys online to try to make most, if not all, of their money back while still keeping a decent number of Dunnys for themselves. Since each series of Dunnys are produced in limited numbers and packed in a blind assortment, that multiple case purchase is a bit of a gamble. Fans bank on finding those rare, highly valuable figures--packed in foil wrappers to conceal their contents until after purchase--to help bankroll their Dunny habit. Even x-ray machines can't penetrate the box and wrapper to reveal what's inside.
The official sale began at 6 p.m. sharp, and the first sale of the coveted toys was a multiple-case purchase by one person. (The amount spent was almost a full month's rent for a cheap, one-bedroom Montrose apartment.)

In less than an hour, one collector had found a chase figure. Lucky for him, the figure was currently commanding close to $250 on the online market. But not everyone who buys multiple cases ends up with a Dunny that commands a couple of c-notes.
Of course, the more you buy, the better your chances.
