Video Game Atlas: Monkey Island
Once a week Art Attack will offer you a handy little travel guide to the fictional worlds of video games.
Name: Monkey Island, Monkey Island Series
Population: Surprisingly few monkeys
The Caribbean is home to plenty of islands full of pirate history, but perhaps none is more famous than Monkey Island. Site of many of the adventures of the legendary Guy Thrushbeard, it also served as the base of operations for the notorious undead pirate king and voodoo aficionado LeChuck.
Though once boasting an indigenous cannibal tribe population in the northern end, they were driven from the island by LeChuck to resettle on nearby Blood Island. Even so, the cannibals were a fairly friendly folk that were often kind to visitors as long as proper respect was shown to their gods in the form of small offerings.
That god was best represented by the iconic Giant Monkey Head, a popular attraction. As its name suggests, the Head is a massive cavern entrance in the shape of a Monkey's Skull. There is a maze of dangerous caves that can be reached through its maw, though you may have to find a key shaped like a Q-tip to insert in its left ear to open it. Largely unexplored and full of perils, the Giant Monkey Head should be viewed from afar by tourists for their own safety.
Previously, the famed Rollercoaster of Death traveled through the caverns as part of the attractions of the now-defunct Big Whoop Amusement Park. The coaster was yet another of the nefarious plots by LeChuck, and had a habit of dumping riders into lava pools so that their skeletons could be harvested as undead soldiers. Later adjustments by Elaine Marley rerouted the coaster so that it was comparatively safer.
Power on Monkey Island is provided through its monkey population in a scientific principle known as Dynamo-Monkelectricity. The exact nature of the principle is unknown, but does require the island's cryptozoological marvel, the three-headed monkey, to operate.
Monkey Island is also a popular wedding destination for those who wish to cement their union in death. The First Church of LeChuck headed by Allegro Rasputin is located on the slopes of the dormant volcano in the Western part of the island. A lava river flows from the mouth of the impressive gothic cathedral's entrance. Weddings are conducted by allowing couples to ride down the river in boats coated with StanTech Voodoo-Enhanced Asbestos, where they will then die and be resurrected as ghost couples. Be sure to observe the life of LeChuck represented in the Church's stained-glass windows.
An island paradise full of mystery, wonder and the history of piracy in the Americas, Monkey Island is a definite destination for the tourist interested in exploring the tropical utopias. Just be sure to ignore any talking skulls.
