Bosses who take credit for your ideas. Fools who can't talk on the phone and drive at the same time. Boyfriends who desert you for another city and say they're "just changing addresses." Plenty of things in this life fill us with murderous rage, ladies. But instead of slicing tiny wounds in your forearms, sticking pins in voodoo dolls, or writing scathing letters you'll never send, head down to Urban Jungle in the Heights, where Tony and Michelle Torres-Aponte have been teaching women's self-defense for the last decade. Their three-part course includes predator profiling, defensive techniques and -- the best part -- full assault training. In this final class, a professional fighter dons head-to-toe body armor, and students are encouraged to go postal on him with the evasive maneuvers, empowering yells and debilitating kicks they learned in the first two sessions. After that intensive rage-a-thon, you'll forget all about those pesky people who piss you off. Now get over there and kick some man-ass.
My Voice Nation Help

Do not join Urban Jungle Self Defense in the Heights!! They are dishonest at best. I started training there in July 2007. I was routinely told to "be selfish" and "quit helping" new students. Likewise, I was provided very little assistance in improving my own skills. Tony, the owner, is impossible to hire for private classes. Instead, he gives you a run around, sending you from one employee to another and promising to "get back to you soon." I stopped training at their gym after nine months of discouragement and frustration. Now, after months at a new gym, Urban Jungle has suddenly started charging my bank account for membership that I have asked to be closed. They are insisting that I must continue to pay them through the "term" of the contract which they seem to be prolonging indefinitely.

The one good thing I can say is that there are some genuinely nice guys who are members. However, you can find nice guys anywhere; a good instructor is much more rare. Stay away from this gym!

I went to a free trial class, and the owner, Tony Torres-Aponte, laughed at me and mocked me as a entered the class.

My boyfriend stuck it out for several months, and ended up disappointed time after time. It was impossible to schedule a private class. The owner would reply that his "plate is full right now" or that he's get back to him to schedule. They even charged him 2 months AFTER he left and joined a new gym!

Avoid the headache; don't join this gym!
