Best Thai Restaurant Houston 2007 - Kanomwan

Kanomwan has a cult following that speaks for itself. Sometimes the people who eat here communicate with each other using menu item numbers like a secret code. They also insist that the owner puts an addictive substance in the food that keeps them coming back at least once a week. There's a healthy dose of heat in just about everything, but the kitchen will happily make things spicier for you — at your own peril. The owner tends to have a wicked sense of humor when customers mess with the menu. Definitely check out the pork toasts (A3), tom yum goong (S1), tom ka gai (S3), pad panang (H5) and whole fried snapper with chile sauce (H11). Then you too will make the weekly trek out to Telephone Road with your bottle of wine or cooler of beer to quell your addiction for some sweet, sweet S3.

The last time I went to Kon (and I will not return), I was with guests from Chicago. We arrived at 8pm on December 23rd (We went to Vieng Thai first, but it was closed). At 9:30pm, the owner asked us to leave. It was not a busy night and we were the only ones left in the restaurant. He had not interest in allowing us to have a slow, fun evening with friends.

Vieng Thai also closes early, but the food is much better than Kon. However, it too is slowly going downhill. Several years ago, you ordered your food without discussing the degree of spiciness. Each dish was spicy and delicious. Now, it is difficult to get a spicy dish at Vieng.

Thai Gourmet is an excellent choice for spicy, delicious Thai food. Asia Market on Cavalcade is my #1 place.

I prefer The Mango Tree on Grant (just west of 249). This is a great resturant, clean, (as is Kanomwan) and has good service. This has become the favorite resturant of my wife and myself. You can add or take away the heat to meet your taste.

Oh, no, no, no, no!!! The BEST Thai restaurant is Merlion in Seabrook!!! Chef Andrew (related to the King and Queen of Bangkok) is full-blooded Thai and his curry is absolutely second to none!!! He also has a signature peanut sauce for his spring rolls that literally will make you lick the bowl it came in!! He serves a Kobe beef dish that is magnificent and his partner, Madelienne brings in only the best boutique wines that can be found around the globe! For GREAT Thai food, it is well worth the drive to Second Street in Seabrook!!

The restaurant is situated right across from a water inlet on the bay in an eclectic little house that has the most unique ambiance. Don't be in a hurry, because each dish is prepared from scratch!!! No fast food here!!

Christopher Smith, no need to be so offensive and insulting...lol. My three lines review has nothing to do with my attention span...just that I have a real busy job as an well-paid engineer...and no time to put to many words into a review. You have your own taste and I have mine and...I am Thai...lol. So as a Thai who has very refined pallet for real Thai food....I just want people of Houston to experience the real Thai cooking. I don't think it is of poor taste to mention other establishments in the review. Both of those two places have been highly rated. In fact, one of them was the winner of Best of Houston for 2005 and 2006 and was highly recommended by Houston Press and Houston Chronicle. So chill out, please....it's only a meal...lol.

I was there just last night and Tina..... the place had a table with 8-10 Thai to my right and another Thai couple to my right. I would hardly call 2.00 for fresh eggrolls or the 8.95 for red curry overpriced. Might i mention as well that the restrooms were spotless, and channel 13 has given the kitchen the same accolades. Perhaps the only thing over rated is badmouthing online and the only thing in poor taste mentioning other dining establishments in a review. Perhaps though your pallet is as refined as your attention span in writing 3 lines. This place is fantastic and worth the experience. Anyone would be wise to give it a try!

Sorry, cannot agree on this one. Over priced and over rated. Thai people don't even go there....how can it be best Thai. Check out the 2005 and 2006 winner, Vieng Thai or Thai Gourmet instead.

Kanomwan (a.k.a. TN) is great! I've had friends come in from London, and the only food they want in Houston is the S3. Be careful getting anything extra spicy, or you'll be sweating all night. Great place to catch up with friends over dinner, or phone in an order for take-out - nothing like having the tasty S12 while watching your FF team roll.
