Best Soul Food Restaurant - 2009
The Kitchen Soul Food - CLOSED
This place is a dump, but the cooking is stellar. The wise move is to get your food packed up to go and enjoy it at home. The steam table features melt-in-your-mouth oxtails in brown gravy, fork-tender smothered pork chops, a falling-apart pepper steak in spicy sauce, and Creole meatloaf, all served with two vegetables and cornbread. In the one-bowl-meal category, there's chicken gumbo, ham hocks with butter beans, and a bowl of stewed chicken and fluffy homemade dumplings in a peppery gravy with a huge hunk of sweet cornbread on the side. The prices are ridiculously cheap — chicken and dumplings is $6.50, meat and vegetables are $8 to $10. The Kitchen Soul Food does lots of catering, and it's easy to see why. You can feed a big crowd some awesome home cooking for peanuts.
the food is always excellent the customer service is amazing my favorite is gumbo i will always continue to eat here. My experience is great every time i have ever been.
I am a single non cooking man and I have been eating out everyday for the past 16 years. The Soulfood Kitchen has become my everyday spot. I have finally found a place like home. The environment and the food is outstanding. The oxtails are tender, the meatloaf is tasty and the greens make me feel like i am at home in mississippi. Fried fish, black eye peas, red beans w/sausage, cabbage, etc. You name it, they got it. And people, I have eaten at possibly every restuarant in the city, but this is it!!!!!!!!
Been coming here for years. The place is my cheers. There is always good food and great company. This is a great place to come when I need a lift or chicken soup. Everyone is welcome just glad the place is here.
I read your review and decided to go to the kitchen soul food on friday. To my surprise this restaurant was not a dump.I decided on pork chops, and it was delicious, the side orders were great also the price were reasonable I read two cents review and guess what, He should have kept it.
I tried this place because of above average yelp reviews and I was hankering for some meatloaf. You're right, the place is a dump. Unfortunately, so is the meatloaf. You couldn't pay me 6.95 to eat at that place again. The meatloaf didn't even look like it had meat in it, the corn and mac & cheese were barely par but only because it was store bought. I love soul food, and I didn't get a chance to try the oxtails, but the only people that eat here are octogenarians and people that are clearly setting the bar way too low. I'm sure its run by the nicest people in the world and for that I feel bad but this is just my opinion/fair warning and its nothing personal.
