While a few Republican babies were thrown out with the bathwater of the 2008 Democratic courthouse landslide — Caprice Cosper, anyone? — such was not the case with the election of veteran defense attorney Shawna Reagin. In defeating crotchety old Jack Rains, she had support from both ends of the political spectrum and both sides of the bar. Somewhat miraculously, she has disappointed neither. Her legal mind has been honed to a razor's edge by years of appellate and writ work, and defendants with bogus stories tend to find little sympathy in her court. But here's the thing: She can be compassionate and is unafraid of doing so. Unlike so many of our judges in Hang 'Em High Harris County, she never throws away some poor young soul's life if there are viable alternatives. To paraphrase one prosecutor turned defense attorney, "She's tough when she needs to be, compassionate when she can be and always smart enough to know when to be either."
Once again, this author shows he knows NOTHING about the criminal courthouse. Judge Reagin defeated BRIAN Rains. Jack Rains was Secretary of State for Texas. How do you expect anyone with any knowledge of the criminal justice system to respect the opinions you express here?? Very disappointed in the level of professionalism, I expect more from the Houston Press.
The channel 11 story yesterday reminds us why we threw out all the soft-headed democratic ' compassinate' judges in Harris county a few years ago.

well i am in her court now. she has told me if i try to do a trial then i will get the max time witch is 10 YEARS. i dont think that is just because she hasnt even herd my case. i have a steady job, a family, and only one other charge on me ever. and never have failed one of the courts or my p.o.'s random drug test that i have taken. what i have done does not merrit 2- 10. when this is all done with we will see how fair and just she is. i know she is used to seeing real crimenals everyday but we dont need another judge that has become used to that and just throws you in the stack but maybe someone should remind her that one day she too will be judged.
Well I guess seeing is believing and the only way to truly give a fair opinion is to be there first hand. I have been to her court nine times already with my spouse who is on trial and I have seen her give a man probabtion who was out on bond and re violated. Is that possible? Guess so in HER court. With that being said I will hope for the best because through God's grace and will all things are possible. Prosecutor turn defense attorney turn judge; I mean come on that says it all.
Best Criminal Court Judge...say who????She is the most egotistical one sided Judge I have ever encountered.She doesn't even read briefs she has requested because her head is up the butt's of the Harris County DA's.She's un-fair and un-just!!You're causing taxpayers way TOO MUCH MONEY because Family's have to get on Medicaid while your head's in a frikin'cloud. Get real or get out!
Served on a grand jury for her court. I was VERY impressed with her when we got to meet. Good to see she is recognized for her work.
