Whether it's the "Heart Throb" banh mi with double pork, double chicken, two eggs and bacon; a rice vermicelli bowl topped with freshly grilled chicken and egg rolls; or a bowl of the best vegan curry you'll find anywhere in town, Cafe TH delivers Vietnamese with food that's made with care and fresh, wholesome ingredients. It's the hallmark of owner Minh Nguyen's brand. He has revamped what was once an old sandwich shop in East Downtown into a foodie destination that attracts local chefs and foodie-types from all corners of Houston. Thursday and Friday nights, Cafe TH also offers a BYOB three-course white-tablecloth prix-fixe service with a menu that changes weekly. Nguyen's desserts, like his Cafe du Monde cake, convert non-believers instantly.

I went to Cafe TH.  We had the special which was 4 good tacos, noodles and peppers and fried banana and a cafeteria level Pumpkin Pie with soda and coffee- they don;t serve alcohol for about $85.  Oh yeah and I had to add a sandwhich- they didn't change out the noodles (my mother wouldn't eat them).  It was a classic ghetto style sandwhich especially if you were to add the bacon and other meats to it.  I've not changed my natural ability to taste enough yet to crave this one- my real tastes are still intact- but of this type of food it is the tops- the bread is not the gourmet style Bagquet bread but junk food french bread which is probably going to be the bread of choice for people who have conditioned their tastes this way.  But when it comes to the butter/grease brushed onto your food experience- trust me the sisters at the main downtown Specs get the grease/butter on the bread with the many meats combination sandwhich dish better.   Cafe Th's trash/ghetto sandwhich is good but the ones at Specs are better because these cooks are contenders for all time champions at making these types of heart attack on a plate meals.  And while you might start out thinking they are gross and junky, trust me after about the 10th one you will be cursing out loud to the waitress who dares to serve you your food without a pound of melted butter and grease placed on it first.

I also loved that the owner was playing his idea of "authentic music" for the Houston Press Hipsters, down home blacks and old people at the same time.  It made for the most unusual music mix that I will probably ever hear in my life...
