When last we heard from the Houston Aeros, they had just defeated the San Antonio Rampage for their fourth win a row and were preparing to take one of those road trips only a politician could love: four games, five nights, six different hotels.
First there was a quick trip to Quad Cities, then the return to Houston, the bus ride to San Antonio, the bus ride back to Houston, the flight to Chicago, the bus ride to Des Moines, then the bus ride to Peoria.
Well, it’s all over and the Aeros are back in Houston after going 2-2 on the trip, winning games one and four to improve their record to 18-14-1-2 on the season with 39 points to move solidly into fourth place of the West Division of the Western Conference.
They defeated the Quad Cities Flames 4-3 in a shut out last Friday with Benoit Pouliot getting the winning goal. They lost on Saturday night to the San Antonio Rampage by a score of 6-1. Taking a day out for travel, they played in Des Moines on New Year’s Day and lost to the Iowa Stars 5-4. That loss was the first time this season that the Aeros have lost game while scoring 3 or more goals in a game. And the New Year’s Day game against the Peoria Rivermen went to overtime before Jon Awe got the power play goal to ice the Aeros 3-2 victory. The goal was Awe’s second goal in two nights, and it was the second time this year that he’s scored the game-winning goal in overtime.
The Aeros return to Toyota Center this weekend for two games with the Iowa Stars. They play tonight at 7:35 and Sunday afternoon at 4:05. The Aeros will have a day game at Toyota Center next Thursday, as they are set to take on the Manitoba Moose at 11:05 a.m. -- John Royal
