Aeros Win Three in Row
The Aeros had lost three straight games heading into this weekend, but now they’re on a three-game winning streak. They defeated the Syracuse Crunch 5-4 in a shootout on Friday night. They defeated the Hamilton Bulldogs 2-1 in overtime on Saturday night, and yesterday they shutout the Rochester Americans 4-0.
The win streak has upped the Aeros record to 30-22-2-3 with 65 points. This puts them in a fifth-place tie in the AHL’s West Division with the Milwaukee Admirals. And the team is now one point behind the Peoria Rivermen for fourth place in the Division. The win streak has also put the Aeros back into the playoffs. Of course, with over a month left in the season, the Aeros and a playoff spot are not a sure thing.
SOME MISCELLANEOUS WEEKEND NOTES:
Barry Brust was in the goal for all three games. Sunday’s win was his sixth win in his last seven games, and it was also his first shutout victory of the season.
The Friday and Saturday wins both came after regulation play had ended, and in both games, the Aeros had come from behind for the victory. At one point on Friday, the team trailed the Syracuse Crunch by a score of 4-1.
Erik Reitz got his 150th career professional point on Friday night. All of his points have come as a Houston Aero. Serge Payer’s goal on Sunday was also the 150th point of his professional career.
With one game left on the current road trip, the Aeros are 16-12-1-1 on the road for this season. They won only 13 road games for all of the 2006-07 season, going 13-22-3-2. They are 10-4-0-0 for their last 14 road games.
And for any of you who are curious, Kevin Constantine did not play John Scott on Friday night, so Syracuse didn’t have the chance to seek revenge for Scott’s skating in their zone during warm-ups way back in October.
The Aeros will next play Wednesday night in Cleveland, where they take on the Lake Erie Monsters. They will then return to Houston for ten straight games. – John Royal
