Gee, Drayton, Couldn't You Have Waited A Couple of Weeks?
Nice work, Drayton. I told you not to rush with hiring Ed Wade. I told you to take some time, and to make well-thought out decision. I said that there was no rush. To wait until after the World Series and to see who became available. I begged you to wait for all of the options.
But you wouldn't listen. You just had to have Ed Wade.
Sure, Terry Ryan, who'd done wonders with the small-market Twins was resigning from his job with Minnesota, but you didn't even try to interview him. And if you'd waited, wow, what choices you would have had. Like Walt Jocketty, who the Cardinals dumped last week.
You could've even had a possible shot at one of the best GMs in baseball. The man who assembled the starting rotation of Greg Maddux, Tom Glavine and John Smoltz. Who built one of the best farm systems in baseball. But you couldn't wait, could you? You just had to have Ed Wade. So what if John Schuerholz was the GM who built World Series teams in Kansas City and Atlanta. You had to have Ed Wade.
Terry Ryan. Walt Jocketty. John Schuerholz. Three of the most respected GMs in baseball. All who are now out of a job.
And you got Ed Wade.
Nice job. -- John Royal
