Longhorns Can't Brag About Buckeye Victory
I want to thank The Ohio State Buckeyes. Sure, they lost to the Texas Longhorns, but because the Longhorns needed a bad spot by the referees to help get the victory, I'm pretty damn sure that the country has been saved from listening to Longhorn fans bitch about not playing for the BCS Title.
Because, Longhorn fan, if your team is dependent on bad officiating to beat The Ohio State Buckeyes - a team that had to play without its best player for most of the second half because of an injury - then your team isn't worthy of being the national champion. So do us all a favor and shut up already.
Though I don't like The Ohio State Buckeyes - is there any one more overrated football conference than the Big
11 10, and I think that whole The Ohio State University thing is pretty stupid - it would have been nice to see the Buckeyes win that game so I could have seen how the Longhorn fans would have made this defeat disappear like they made the team's defeat to Texas Tech disappear.
But, alas, that's not going to happen.
The officials decided that Colt McCoy wasn't supposed to be touched. And they decided to screw up the spot of the ball on what could have been Texas's final offensive play of the night - giving the Horns a first down on what easily could have been a loss of the ball on downs. And if The Ohio State tight end could have held on to a pass in the end zone on a two-point conversion attempt, then the game would have gone into overtime. Hell, if The Ohio State had just decided to kick the extra point after its last two touchdowns the game would have gone into overtime.
And did I mention that the Buckeyes beat up on the vaunted Horns in the fourth quarter while their best player was on the bench because of an injury?
It no longer matters what happens on Thursday night. Oklahoma can win the game. Florida can win the game. But no matter what, the Horns definitely ain't worthy of that number one spot. Not after they needed help and miracles to beat the Buckeyes.
So thank you to the Ohio State Buckeyes. Thank you for shutting up the Longhorn fans.
SOME MISCELLANEOUS COLLEGE FOOTBALL NOTES:
Texas Tech was embarrassed by Ole Miss in the Cotton Bowl, and Texas needed some bad officiating to beat Ohio State, but at least Rice and Houston upheld the good name of Texas football.
The Rice Owls defeated Western Michigan 38-14 in the Texas Bowl last week to earn their first victory in a bowl in 54 years when they won the 1954 Cotton Bowl. Rice led 38-0 at one point in the fourth quarter, and the Owl offense got 455 yards in total offense.
The Owls, who finished this season at 10-3, may have some problems in duplicating their success next season. Quarterback Chase Clement and receiver Jarett Dillard are seniors, and sophomore phenom James Casey declared himself eligible for the NFL draft yesterday. But don't despair, come the 2010 season, former Cy-Fair stud Sam McGuffie, who is in the process of transferring to Rice from Michigan, will be eligible to play football once again - athletes who transfer schools must sit out a season.
And on New Year's Eve, the Houston Cougars took on Air Force, getting the 34-28 win in the Armed Forces Bowl in Fort Worth. The win avenged an earlier loss to Air Force this season, when the two teams had to play a game in Dallas due to Hurricane Ike. But besides avenging the earlier loss to Air Force, the win was the Cougars' first bowl victory since 1980 when they defeated Navy in the Garden State Bowl. The win also snapped the nation's longest streak of postseason losses, which stood at eight.
