Texas College Football Report
Unlike the Texas Longhorns, there were actually a couple of college teams in this state that decided to play games this weekend.
The Cougars decamped to Dallas to play Air Force and lost 31-28. The outer bands of Ike interfered with play, as the game was played in rain and with winds gusting as much as 25 miles per hour.
Air Force didn’t complete a single pass in the game, but since they are a running team, that probably didn’t matter all of that much. The Coogs did score 21 second half points, including 14 in the fourth quarter, but they just couldn’t get the win. Cougar QB Case Keenum seemingly handled the gusts with ease, however, as he threw for 362 yards and four TDs. The defense, however, still refuses to stop anyone, and the Cougars are now 1-2 on the season.
Houston's next game is scheduled for this Saturday in Fort Collins against Colorado State. The current rumor is that the Coogs will not be returning to Houston this week, but will instead head straight for Colorado.
TCU also played while the winds of Ike whooshed around the Metroplex, but it didn’t seem to bother the Horned Frogs as they got the easy victory over Stanford.
Rice got out of Houston and headed to Tennessee where they played Vanderbilt. The score was tied 21-21 at the half, but the Vandy defense clamped down on the Rice offense and won the game 38-21. Rice QB Chase Clement threw for 299 yards and one TD in the loss.
The Owls are supposedly back in Houston, and they are supposedly trying to prepare for this weekend’s game in Austin against the Longhorns. Let’s hope the mighty Longhorns don’t run from this game like they ran from the game against Arkansas. -- John Royal
