The John Royal College Football Top 25, Week Three

Here are my college football rankings after Week Three of the season. You can compare them to the AP and Coaches Polls

here

. And my rankings from last week are

here

.

1. USC Trojans (2-0): Is there any doubt as to who this season’s best college team is? They shut down Ohio State this weekend 35-3, and they now appear set to bowl over the Pac-10.

2. Oklahoma Sooners (3-0): Just another easy victory, this time 55-14 over Washington. A Trojan/Sooner BCS game would be damn good.

3. Missouri Tigers (3-0): The Tigers are easily the class of the Big-12 North. Nevada, which had a decent team, didn’t stand a chance, losing 69-17.

4. LSU Tigers (2-0): The Hurricane Gustav didn’t harm these Tigers any. They roared to the easy 41-3 victory over North Texas.

5. Florida Gators (2-0): They didn’t play this week as they were on a bye.

6. Texas Tech Red Raiders (3-0): Tech QB Graham Harrell through for 419 yards and five TD in the 43-7 victory over SMU. Could Tech really be in position to give Oklahoma and Texas a run for the money this year? We’ll see.

7. Utah Utes (3-0): Rolled to an easy 58-10 victory over Utah State.

8. Alabama Crimson Tide (3-0): Nick Saban is getting the Tide back into BCS title contention. I know Alabama wants this, but as soon as this happens, I bet Saban splits for another job.

9. Georgia Bulldogs (3-0): Struggled to defeat a South Carolina team fresh off of a loss to Vanderbilt.

10. Texas Longhorns (2-0): The Longhorns drop in my rankings because they postponed their game against Arkansas because they didn’t want to get wet this past weekend. Ike and the rain didn’t stop TCU and Houston from playing.

11. Southern Florida Bulls (3-0): Did I or did I not tell you that USF’s game against Kansas would be the game to watch this weekend? The Bulls overcame a 17-point deficit to win on a last second field goal off of the foot of freshman Maikon Bonani. I hope that you got to watch some of it.

12. BYU Cougars (3-0): BYU didn’t need bad officiating to win this weekend. All they needed was to score 28 points in the span of 5:18 of the second quarter to put away UCLA. The final score was 59-0, and it was the first time UCLA had been shut out since 2001.

13. ECU Pirates (3-0): East Carolina struggled a bit this weekend, playing down to the level of their Conference USA competition, beating Tulane only 28-24.

14. Auburn Tigers (3-0): I hope that none of you watched their 3-2 snooze-fest victory over Mississippi State. I think being without power would be better than watching a football game like this.

15. TCU Horned Frogs (3-0): The Horned Frogs played this game in Fort Worth as the first outer bands of Ike were reaching the Metroplex. But this didn’t keep them from beating Stanford 31-14.

16. Kansas Jayhawks (2-1): Lost a compelling and fun game to USF 37-34. USF is a top-ranked team, and Kansas played them tough, which is why I’m not dropping them lower.

17. Wake Forest Demon Deacons (2-0): Had the bye week.

18. Boise State Broncos (2-0): Bronced their way to a 20-7 win over Bowling Green.

19. Oregon Ducks (2-0): Struggled in defeating Purdue 32-26.

20. Vanderbilt Commodores (3-0): That’s right, Vanderbilt. Scored 17 second half points to defeat Rice 38-21.

21. Penn State Nittany Lions (3-0): Easily handled Syracuse 55-13 to make my rankings for the first time this season.

22. Florida State Seminoles (2-0): Romped to the easy 46-7 win over Chattanooga. Welcome to my rankings, Florida State.

23. Wisconsin (3-0): Held onto defeat Fresno State 13-10. Not a very impressive victory.

24. West Virginia (1-1): They had a bye week, so I won’t drop them out of the rankings.

25. Ohio State Buckeyes (2-1): Embarrassed 35-3 by USC. Sure, Beanie Wells didn’t play, but they looked really bad. Let’s hope this finishes any talk of Ohio State in the BCS game.

And dropping out this week were Arizona State, 23-20 losers to UNLV; California, 35-27 losers to Maryland; and UCLA, who were demolished by BYU.
