17th Annual Swing Dance Championships
Swing dancing didnt die (again) in the late 90s. Believe it or not, theres still enough interest to fuel the 17th Annual Swing Dance Championships. Dancers who continued jumping, jiving and wailing after the quadrillionth revival of the 1920s-era culture will be strutting their stuff throughout the weekend in competitions ranging from novice to master levels. The contest is open to all hepcats who think they can collar the jive, but its going to take more than a few hops and jumps to impress these judges. The four-day event will also include classes and nightly social dances open to all skill levels.
It all starts today with the Champion Workshop (i.e., seasoned swingers only) at 8 p.m., followed by the Early Bird Dance (open to all) at 9 p.m. Wyndham Hotel-Greenspoint, 12400 Greenspoint Drive. The competition runs today through Sunday. For information and a complete schedule, call 817-654-1736 or visit www.americasclassic.com. Tickets start at $10 for spectators and $35 for competitors.
