7th Jubilee of Dance
The Houston Ballet takes a break from relentless Nutcracker-ing today with its annual Jubilee of Dance, a showcase of works old and new meant to rally the dance-loving base in the heart of the holiday season. The program includes a number of favorites, including the delicate pas de deux Diamonds from George Balanchines Jewels and a selection from Sleeping Beauty, as well as a host of more modern works, including James Kudelkas Little Dancer, an all-male work set to the vibrant tones of Philip Glass, and Artistic Director Stanton Welchs Play, set to the Moby song of the same name. An excerpt from the forthcoming revival of Marie, based on the life of Marie Antoinette, should whet appetites for spring, but the true holiday gift for fans will be a new work by Welch called Rossini, featuring 18 female dancers dressed in white, set to an excerpt from Rossinis 1812 comic opera La Scala di Seta. 7:30 p.m. Wortham Center, 500 Texas. For information, call 713-227-2787 or visit www.houstonballet.org. $35 to $160.
