Akiyama and the Ax
The Land of the Rising Sun is home to some of the most progressive musicians on the planet. Its capital, Tokyo, has been a breeding ground for a whole new batch of avant-garde musicians, including improv guitarist Tetuzi Akiyama, who'll play two sets today at the Live Oak Friends Meeting House. For his acoustic set, Akiyama will string up and break down some serious boogie riffs on his acoustic ax; this part of the performance will coincide with the coming of evening, as viewed through Skyspace, the open-air installation by James Turrell. What follows is his visceral electric set performed under Night Piece, Turrell's neon light installation. The amplified sounds could best be described as a John Lee Hooker-John Fahey-John Cage-Marc Bolan jam session.
