Alamo Drafthouse Rolling Roadshow: Bernie

Shirley MacLaine, Jack Black and Matthew McConaughey take Texas eccentricity just about as far as it can go in Bernie, part of the Big Movie Classics series at Market Square. MacLaine is Marjorie, a needy, greedy grump who also happens to be the richest person in town. Black is Bernie, a gentle if somewhat out-of-step mortician who becomes her only friend. And assistant. And cook. And social secretary. And financial consultant. And a whole lot of other roles Marjorie ungraciously dumps on him. McConaughey is the district attorney who accuses Bernie of murder when Marjorie is found dead in her freezer.

Based on Skip Hollandsworth's 1998 Texas Monthly article ''Midnight in the Garden of East Texas'' about the actual murder and trial, Bernie is a Texas tall tale filled with the blackest of black humor.
