Alamo Drafthouse Rolling Roadshow: The Godfather, Part 1

Francis Ford Coppola’s Academy Award-winning film The Godfather didn’t just alter the way the public saw gangsters, it altered the way gangsters saw themselves. Ordinary low-life criminals were suddenly aspiring to have Marlon Brando class. According to Tim Adler, author of Hollywood and the Mob, the film “rehabilitated gangsters into men of honour instead of what they really were — pig-ignorant, violent-sentimental goombahs.”

Brando stars as Don Vito Corleone, the head of a powerful crime family. James Caan appears as Sonny, and Al Pacino as Michael, Corleone’s sons, both of whom go into the family business just as a gang war breaks out among Corleone and his rivals.

The American Film Institute ranks The Godfather among the ten best American films ever made. You can see why at the Alamo Drafthouse Rolling Roadshow’s outdoor screening. 8 p.m. Market Square Park, 300 Travis. For information, call 713-650-3022 or visit
