Alamo Drafthouse Valentine Day’s screening

You and your sweetie can enjoy a yummo meal and snuggle in the dark while watching a romantic comedy when Alamo Drafthouse screens Shakespeare in Love for Valentine’s Day. The 1998 release follows a fictionalized Shakespeare (Joseph Fiennes), who is suffering from writer’s block and looking for a new muse. He finds one in the beautiful Viola (Gwyneth Paltrow), a young woman set to marry someone else. Of course, Viola is more than just a pretty face — she’s also a great actress, something that’s forbidden in Shakespeare’s time. Not one to let tradition stand in her way, Viola dresses up like a man and wins the role of Romeo in Shakespeare’s production of Romeo and Ethyl the Pirate’s Daughter (an early version of Romeo and Juliet). Things get a little complicated from there; there’s a bit about the Queen of England (Dame Judi Dench), some backstage bickering and lots of lip-locking before everything gets happily sorted out. Paltrow won an Oscar for her performance as Viola (the film also took home Oscar honors in six other categories, including Best Picture and Best Screenplay), so even if your date’s a dud, the movie won’t be. 7:30 p.m. Alamo Drafthouse West Oaks, 1000 West Oaks Mall. For information, call 281-920-9211 or visit $6 for the film; additional charge for dinner.
