Alas, alak, Alaska!
Jocelyn Noir, the voice behind Alas, alak, Alaska!, has the eerie beauty of a young Ani DiFranco. The young singer/songwriters folksy ballads are sung in a screechy vibrato conjuring up the image of an old bag lady singing for a pittance in the park. Noir totters between sweet and creepy as she makes her way through songs such as Dallop O Dallas where she sings of being raised in the Lone Star State and Crag Flib Beat where words are replaced with nonsensical mumbling and high-pitched, quiet crooning. Whether she is flying solo on acoustic guitar or joined by her bassist, pianist, drummer, violinist or a combination of the two, three or all of the four, Noir is able to create soothing musings that will no doubt clear up your case of the Mondays. French Quarter, Foot Ox, Listen Listen and Sabra will start out the night and also help settle your nerves at 8 p.m. Super Happy Fun Land, 2610 Ashland St. For information, call 713-880-2100 or visit www.superhappyfunland.com. $7.
