By the time the actual NBA All-Star game happens today, we can imagine a lot of people will be seriously broke, or pooped, or both. But no matter -- the hottest names in Houston rap are capping off the night on opposite ends of downtown. So we're pretty sure Houston won't be showing any signs of slowing down -- at least until Monday.
At 8 p.m. on the south side of downtown at Rich's (2401 San Jacinto, 713-759-9606), Johnny Dang, the crown jeweler responsible for nearly every rapper's sparkling diamond grilles, will be putting on the Big Ball. The night's highlights include a performance by Dang's business partner and the People's Champ, Paul Wall, along with the G.R.i.T. Boys, Kage, Dub, P.T. and another half-dozen H-Town rappers. If you haven't thrown down the bones for your own set of grilles, Dang will be giving away one worth $5,000 as well as a diamond watch. You must be present to win, but with all the acts that are scheduled to perform, we doubt you'll be going anywhere anytime soon. For information, visit www.thebigballonline.com. $50 to $100.
On the other side of downtown, the big guns of H-Town and Southern rap, like Scarface, Slim Thug, Juvenile and Dem Franchize Boyzwill hold it down at the Dirty South All-Star Showcase at 8 p.m. in the recently opened Warehouse Live (813 St. Emanuel). There will also be a DJ Battle hosted by Scratch magazine, which will include special performances by Devin the Dude, Green Lantern, Jokaman and Short Dawg, along with sets by DJ Rapid Ric and DJ Chill. Local DJs interested in flexing their skills and hoping for a chance to catch the ear of a superstar can sign up by calling 713-236-8911 or e-mailing
