We think of Christopher Kimball, host of the PBS cooking show America’s Test Kitchen, as a sort of Mr. Rogers-meets-the Science Guy, with just a tiny little bit of the Galloping Gourmet sneaking in around the edges. Kimball has quite a following for both his television show and cookbooks, and during today’s America’s Test Kitchen LIVE with Christopher Kimball, he introduces Houston food fans to the secrets of the show’s tasting, testing and experimenting techniques. The behind-the-scenes tour includes clips of food disasters from the show (think badly burned rice and a TODAY Show segment gone so wrong firefighters were almost called). The multimedia presentation also includes video and audio clips of food celebs such as Downton Abbey’s fearsome cook Mrs. Patmore (played by British actress Lesley Nicol); Mary Roach, author of Gulp: Adventures on the Alimentary Canal; competitive food eaters; colorful characters from the culinary world (think vindictive cheese-makers!); and experts who help Kimball in his search to define “good cooking.” Expect a live sniff test and a couple of culinary science experiments. A few lucky fans will participate in an onstage chocolate taste test. After his presentation, Kimball opens up the floor for a Q&A session with the audience.
Presented by Society for the Performing Arts, America’s Test Kitchen LIVE with Christopher Kimball begins at 8 p.m. Jones Hall for the Performing Arts, 615 Louisiana. For information, call 713‑227‑4772 or visit spahouston.org. $38 to $88.
