Anna in the Tropics

Nilo Cruz’s 2003 Pulitzer Prize-winning drama Anna in the Tropics is a glorious tale. Set in Tampa during the 1920s, the play recounts the story of a group of cigar workers. During their hours processing tobacco and rolling cigars, they’re entertained by a lector, someone who reads to them to help keep the boredom at bay. The play opens with the workers anxiously awaiting their new lector to arrive (he’s sailing in from Cuba). They soon find out this lector is no ordinary reader, and he will read no ordinary book. He’ll be reading Tolstoy’s Anna Karenina. Through the lector’s charming personality and the force of Tolstoy’s epic tale of love and heartbreak, the cigar-rollers’ lives are changed forever.

Anna in the Tropics runs through October 1 at Country Playhouse, 12802 Queensbury Lane. It continues October 7 through 16 at Talento Bilingüe de Houston, 333 South Jensen. For a full schedule and information, call 713-467-4497 or visit www.countryplayhouse.org. $12 to $22.
