The title Backwards Broadway — Celebration Cabaret isn't exactly accurate. It's more like ''Cross-dressing Broadway.'' Staged in the trendy F Bar, the show is a collection of Broadway standards and hits. All of the required razzle-dazzle is here, but it comes with a gender-bending twist — men sing the female roles and women sing the males'. The crossover makes for a fun and sometimes hilarious take on already much-loved tunes (imagine West Side Story's ''Maria'' sung by a woman in an evening gown and stilettos). Pairs of same-sex vocalists perform the love duets.
F Bar, with its plush lounges and ornate chandeliers, provides the perfect backdrop for this cabaret-style evening when some of Houston's finest vocal talent shows up to perform en travesti for a night full of lighthearted fun. The show is produced and directed by local theater stalwarts Jimmy Phillips and Ron Jones.
