Bald in the Land of Big Hair

In her autobiography about surviving non-Hodgkins lymphoma, acclaimed Texas writer Joni Rodgers says, "In the great barnyard of life, cancer is a manure pile. It stinks, but it makes great fertilizer." And for Rodgers, who lives in the Woodlands area, great fertilizer grows a whole lot of creativity. Out of the stinky soil of her cancer grew a very funny book called Bald in the Land of Big Hair (which takes place in - you guessed it -Texas). Rodgers's tale starts at the beginning of her disease, months before she knew she was sick, and follows her through her funny, heartbreaking and compelling journey from diagnosis through treatment. Now a play featuring local actress Lisa Hamilton (who adapted the script with Rodgers's blessing), the one-woman show is presented by the Pink Ribbons Project with proceeds benefiting The Rose, Houston's leading nonprofit breast cancer organization. Get there early for the reception and stay late for the panel discussion featuring Steve Ford, son of former president Gerald and breast cancer survivor Betty Ford. 6 p.m. reception; 7 p.m. performance. Main Street Theater, 4617 Montrose. For information, call 281-464-5165 or visit $100.
