Bayou City Art Festival

The Bayou City Art Festival takes over a big chunk of downtown real estate this weekend, and Charlie Hardwick's Pop Art paintings take over the festival. Hardwick, known to many of his fans as ''Uncle Charlie,'' has built a career creating colorful concert posters for such groups as The Who, Spoon and Butthole Surfers. Hardwick's paintings will be on view, including a signature work, his bright portrait of a man in a hat with a bouquet of flowers standing in for a face. In addition, one of Hardwick's works is featured on the festival's poster. It's a painting of the Houston skyline, backed by a brilliant sun and overlooking a blue bayou banked by lush green lawns, with stars and flowers framing the scene.

Some 300 other artists, who do ceramics, glass, sculpture, oils, watercolors, and mixed media, will have their works up for sale, while entertainers including Mark Halata and Texavia (Czech polka), Step Rideau & the Zydeco Outlaws (zydeco), and Melloh & the King's Rhythm's (Nigerian Highlife) provide live music throughout the day.
