Bhangin' Party

Rishi Nayak drums up a crowd.

FRI 6/3
This sure sounds like an odd recipe.
First, take the tablas, the drum instrument dating back to the sixth century of what is now northern India. Then, throw in some turntables, which date back to, what, the infant years of disco and hip-hop in New York? Shake well and serve. Turns out the two make a heady cocktail. At Turntablas on the Bayou, part of this weekend's Fusion Fridays gig, DJs Yogi G, ALX and SDF3 will spin house, bhangra, hip-hop and underground Asian dance music. Keeping the beat, percussionist Rishi Nayak taps the tablas and bangs the dholi drums.

"The tablas are a really big eye-opener for a lot of people," says Yogi G, an eight-year veteran of the scene and DJ for the popular KPFT program Generasian Radio. "I think it's a new concept for a lot of Houstonians." Their first Turntablas event in May packed the Social, thanks to glorious patio weather and a winning East-meets-West formula. "We don't want to limit it to our kind of people," Yogi says. He's gotten love for both his radio show and his Bollywood-themed parties from Asians and non-Asians alike.

"A lot of our generation vibes off it," he says. "People that are born here, especially in Houston, like the Western and the Eastern, so there's a good balance." Get your own balance of East and West at 9 p.m. Friday, June 3. 3730 Washington Avenue. For information, call 713-426-5585 or visit Free. -- Travis Ritter
