Big Stars of Comedy
The Kings of Comedy have become like the original 1960s Star Trek television show, but for comedy. The 2000 tour of four prominent African-American comedians (and the resulting film) has led to so many spin-offs, knockoffs and parodies it's hard to remember what the original was actually like. There's the Queens of Comedy, the Latin Kings of Comedy, the Comedians of Comedy, the Killers of Comedy and on and on. Now there's the Big Stars of Comedy, which probably mirrors the original Kings better than any other subsequent group.
Once again, it's a band of black comics who've done miscellaneous film and TV work but are best known for standup. There's Arnez J, a master of physical comedy; the quick-witted Earthquake (who alone earns the group the title Big Stars, as in plus-size guys); Lavell Crawford, a veteran of the Laffapalooza comedy festival; and Anthony Anderson, whose chaotic family life was the basis for his short-lived WB sitcom All About the Andersons. 8 p.m. Reliant Park, 8400 Kirby. For information, call 1-800-745-3000 or visit www.ticketmaster.com. $45 to $65.
Sat., Nov. 27, 8 p.m., 2010
