Buena Vista Social Club
It's the film that revived the long-inactive careers of Cuban master musicians - and renewed the debate about supporting the island's arts and artists under the Castro regime. The Academy Award-winning documentary Buena Vista Social Club introduced Rubén Gonzáles, Compay Segundo and Ibrahim Ferrer, all of whom had been popular musicians during Cuba's golden age of music (from the 1930s to 1950), to a new generation of fans. The performances, from an outdoor plaza in Havana to Carnegie Hall, were remarkable, prompting many to ask why the men had not been working as musicians during the last 50 years (the short answer: Castro). 8:30 p.m. Domy Books, 1709 Westheimer.
