“Christie Blizard: from the tipi project”
Multimedia artist Christie Blizard has been on the Lawndale Art Center’s radar for a couple of years now, says the center’s Executive Director Christine West. ''Several of us had seen work from her elsewhere and…we thought, 'We’ve got to get her here.' She’s just bubbling up, and we wanted Houston to see her work.''
The theme for the ''Christie Blizard: from the tipi project'' exhibit, currently at Lawndale, is a sense of home, which Blizard explores in tipi installations, photographs and video. ''I think she’s really working on this idea of a safe place, a meditative place,'' says West. ''To her the tipi encompasses all those ideas of home.''
Besides the tipi installations in the gallery, Blizard shows photographs of other tipis, including a series she created in Reykjavik, Iceland. One especially interesting photo is of a boarded-up storefront covered in graffiti. On the door is a spray-paint portrait of a man in a suit. Across his chest are the words ''Make Me Happy…I’ll Give You Money.'' Blizard’s tipi installation is at the base of the door, painted to match the man’s coat and tie and blend into the graffiti background.
