Cole Porter’s Great American Songbook
Cole Porter is an American musical version of Oscar Wilde. His lyrics have always danced the line between lighthearted frivolity and brilliant sexual innuendo. The bright airiness of his compositions masked the incredible complexity and depth of his musical talent. The Houston Symphony’s presentation of Cole Porter: The Great American Songbook will bring Porter’s magic to life with vocalists Jennifer Hope Wills and Ryan Silverman.
Porter defined the concept of breakaway Broadway hit, with many of his songs now standard vocal repertoire for artists as diverse as Frank Sinatra, Bono and Jamie Cullum. It’s so ingrained in pop culture, there’s even an unforgettable dance number rendition of “Let’s Do It, Let’s Fall in Love” in Tank Girl.
Tunes in today’s performance include “Night and Day,” “I Get a Kick Out of You” and “Begin the Beguine,” along with “I’ve Got You Under My Skin” and “Let’s Do It, Let’s Fall in Love.” 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday, 7:30 p.m. Sunday. Jones Hall, 615 Louisiana. For information, call 713-227-3974 or visit www.houstonsymphony.org.
