Curb Your Withdrawal

Summertime in Houston is the prime season for a little-known condition called "Opera withdrawal syndrome." Sweltering heat, bad pop songs and Houston Grand Opera's off-season all combine to cause the shakes, extreme boredom and nighttime outbursts of Madame Butterfly highlights. Fortunately, the Houston Ebony Opera Guild can ease the pain today with "Opera Gems," a concert of arias, duets and choruses compiled from the best of Donizetti, Strauss, Verdi, Handel and others. A refreshing northeastern breeze comes via guest stars such as Maestro Willie Anthony Waters of Opera Connecticut, and mezzo soprano Lori-Kaye Miller and soprano Audrey DuBois, both from New York (the songstresses will match up as Carmen and Micaela in the HEOG's upcoming production of Carmen). And Houston-based pros, such as tenor Kenneth Gayle and soprano Melissa Givens, will join the guild's chorus to sing excerpts from Die Fledermaus and Lucia di Lammermoor. Alleviate your symptoms at 5 p.m.
Sun., Aug. 6, 5 p.m.
