De Lange Conference VII: Transforming the Metropolis: City of God
Most of the characters in the Brazilian film City of God are pretty godless. Theyre hoodlums, gangsters, thieves, drug dealers, rapists and killers. In the middle of all this is Rocket, a boy who dreams about becoming a photographer but has little chance of escaping the slum. His chance comes when he takes a picture of the bullet--ridden body of a friend just moments after the boy was shot down. Will he trade the gruesome image of his friend for a start as a photographer? 7 p.m. Rice Cinema, Rice University, 6100 Main. For information, call 713-348-3138 or visit www.ricecinema.rice.edu. $6.
