Dee Dee Bridgewater

It’s almost a rite of passage for women jazz singers to pay tribute to Billie Holiday. Few, however, have done it as well as Dee Dee Bridgewater, who won a Grammy for her release Eleanora Fagan (1915-1959): To Billie with Love from Dee Dee. The trick to tributes is to stay true to the original material while simultaneously making it your own, something Bridgewater manages quite well. Take her rendition of “Good Morning Heartache.” Bridgewater tackles the song with a stripped-down approach that leaves the essence of the song intact, resisting the temptation to use excessive vibrato as many other contemporary singers do. She infuses “My Mother’s Son-in-Law” with an infectious swing that’s upbeat and happy; her phrasing mirrors Holiday’s, but it’s far from a note-for-note copy. Expect to hear “Fine and Mellow,” “Strange Fruit” and, of course, “God Bless the Child.” 8 p.m. Wortham Theater Center, 501 Texas.
