Easy Like Sunday Afternoon
Never mind Barbara Bush -- we're totally down with our New Orleans transplants, especially the musical folk. Today, the Orange Show pays homage those purveyors of zydeco and blues from I-10 east with the Eyeopener Tour: Hurricane Survivors Blues, Jazz and Zydeco Tour. Jump on the bus and you'll catch exclusive performances by Wilfred Chevis and the Texas Zydeco Band, Otha Sanchez and Vincent Trotter. Master guitarist Joe Doucet will also deftly demonstrate the link between blues and zydeco musicians. (Music aficionados know that Chevis and Doucet performed with Clifton Chenier, a.k.a. the King of Zydeco, and that Doucet has collaborated with Texas blues legend Freddie King.)
The shows all go down at some of Houston's most zydeco- and blues-friendly spots: the Eldorado Ballroom, the Silver Slipper and the Big Easy. Roger Wood, author of the music history tome Down in Houston, will discuss the birth of zydeco music in Houston, and University of Houston professor Carl Lindahl will brief folks on the current "Surviving Katrina and Rita in Houston" project led by the Library of Congress. Space is limited, so sign up now to get the blues.Tour departs from the Orange Show, 2402 Munger.
Sun., April 23, 4:30-10 p.m.
